2025 Season Preview: Miami Hurricanes

Miami: Talent-Packed Roster Aims for ACC Crown

I have the Miami Hurricanes at No. 10 in my preseason Top 25, and they are my pick to challenge Clemson for the ACC title and earn their first-ever College Football Playoff bid. Head coach Mario Cristobal has stockpiled an undeniable amount of talent through elite recruiting and the transfer portal. While there are uncertainties—a new quarterback transitioning from Georgia and a defense that needs to gel under a new coordinator—the sheer firepower on this roster gives them one of the highest ceilings in the country.

2024: A Revival Season with a Painful Finish

Last season was a tale of resurgence and heartbreak. Led by Heisman finalist quarterback Cam Ward, Miami’s nation-leading offense powered them to a 9-0 start and a #4 national ranking. They destroyed their in-state rivals Florida and Florida State by a combined score of 77-31, signaling a clear shift in the state’s power dynamic.

But the dream of a perfect season and an ACC title berth unraveled late. A loss to Georgia Tech, followed by a stunning collapse against Syracuse in which they blew a 21-0 lead, cost them a trip to the championship game. The defense, particularly the back seven, was the culprit in both losses. The season was both a massive step forward for the program and a painful “what could have been” reminder of how small the margin for error is at the top.

Offense: Reloading the Firepower

The biggest challenge for Miami is replacing an incredible amount of production. Cam Ward was the #1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, 1,000-yard back Damien Martinez was also drafted, and the top six pass-catchers are all gone. But this is where Cristobal’s recruiting prowess pays off.

Taking over at quarterback is Carson Beck, the #1 rated transfer quarterback from Georgia. Beck led the Bulldogs to a 12-0 regular season in 2023 and entered 2024 as a preseason Heisman favorite before an elbow injury derailed his season. He is as good a reload as possible. In the backfield, the duo of experienced Mark Fletcher and speedy sophomore Jordan Lyle should keep the rushing attack among the nation’s top 20.

The receiver room is banking on new faces to step up, including transfer CJ Daniels (LSU) and BYU star Keelan Marion. The clear strength of the offense, however, is the offensive line. Coached by the guru Alex Mirabal, the unit returns four starters, headlined by All-ACC second-team tackle Francis Mauigoa, and projects to be one of the best in the nation.

Defense: A New Coordinator and a Rebuilt Secondary

Cristobal made two major changes to fix the defense. First, he hired coordinator Corey Hetherman, who engineered the third-largest one-year defensive improvement in the country at Minnesota.

Second, the staff attacked the transfer portal to fix their biggest weakness: the secondary. They signed an unprecedented five four-star defensive back transfers, instantly flipping the unit into an elite strength. Players like Ethan O’Connor (Washington State) and Keionte Scott (Auburn) bring proven Power 4 starting experience. The defensive line remains a force with the return of star ends Rueben Bain and Akheem Mesidor. While they lose All-ACC linebacker Francisco Mauigoa, they added Rutgers’ best player, Mohamed Toure, to fill the void.

The Schedule and the Path

The path to the ACC title will almost certainly go through Clemson. But with a roster this talented, Miami has the firepower to compete with anyone. Their season will come down to how quickly the new pieces—from the quarterback to the secondary—can gel and play up to their immense potential.

Why I’m So Confident

Here’s why I have Miami as a Top 10 team and ACC contender:

  • A roster overflowing with talent from Top 25 high school and transfer classes.
  • An elite quarterback transfer in Carson Beck.
  • One of the best offensive lines in the country.
  • A massively upgraded secondary, turning a weakness into a strength.
  • A proven program-builder in Mario Cristobal entering a pivotal year.

There are questions, but the sheer volume of talent on this roster is undeniable. At No. 10 in my preseason rankings, Miami is my pick to challenge Clemson for the ACC crown and finally break through to the College Football Playoff.
