2025 Season Preview: Illinois Fighting Illini

Illinois: Proving a New Standard of Success

I have the Illinois Fighting Illini at No. 15 in my preseason Top 25. After a historic 10-win season—the program’s first in over two decades—the question in Champaign is no longer about rebuilding; it’s about sustaining. Head coach Bret Bielema has successfully revived the program with a tough, physical identity, and now, with more than 15 starters returning, Illinois is poised to prove that their 2024 success was not a fluke but the new standard for a legitimate Big Ten contender.

2024: A Season for the History Books

Last season was the crowning achievement of Bielema’s rebuild. Illinois notched 10 wins, defeated four ranked opponents, and capped it all off with a dominant Citrus Bowl victory over #14 South Carolina. It was a season defined by grit and resilience. The Illini went 5-1 in one-score games, consistently overcoming fourth-quarter deficits and showcasing a mental toughness that had been absent for years.

The success was a direct result of Bielema’s formula: locking down in-state recruiting, developing talent, and, most importantly, retaining players. In an era of constant roster movement, Illinois returns a veteran core ready to avoid the program’s historical trend of following up great seasons with disappointing sequels.

Offense: A Veteran Unit Ready for More

Under coordinator Barry Lunney, the offense has transformed into a consistent strength. The unit returns eight starters, including the key pieces that made it go. Quarterback Luke Altmyer returns after making significant strides in his intermediate and deep passing game, proving to be one of the Big Ten’s most clutch performers. If he can improve his ball security, he has the potential to be one of the league’s best.

The biggest strength of the team lies in the trenches. The entire 2024 starting offensive line returns, a rarity in modern college football. Headlined by All-Big Ten honorable mention tackle JC Davis, this veteran group should go from solid to dominant in 2025. They will open holes for a talented running back committee led by the powerful Kaden Feagin and explosive Aidan Laughery. The biggest challenge will be replacing the firepower of All-American receiver Pat Bryant, but the Illini will look to former top recruit Malik Elzy and West Virginia transfer Hudson Clement to step up.

Defense: Reloaded and Ready to Dominate

The theme for the defense is continuity. Illinois returns eight of its own starters and cleverly poached three more from rival Wisconsin, giving them a lineup with 11 returning starters in total. The back seven is the strength of the unit and returns completely intact. Led by All-Big Ten corner Xavier Scott, the secondary was one of the nation’s best at limiting explosive plays and has the talent to be a true lockdown group.

Up front, the Illini will reload again. Star outside linebacker Gabe Jacas is back to terrorize opposing quarterbacks, and he’ll be joined by proven transfers from Wisconsin at defensive end and tackle. This is a unit built on experience, cohesion, and the tough, physical identity that Bielema demands.

The Schedule and the Path

The biggest challenge for Illinois will be handling success. They are no longer the underdog. With a veteran roster and a favorable schedule, the path is there to prove they can consistently compete in the top tier of the Big Ten. Avoiding a letdown and maintaining their gritty, one-game-at-a-time mentality will be key.

Why I’m So Confident

Here’s why Illinois is a legitimate Top 15 team:

  • Massive returning production with over 15 starters back.
  • A proven, clutch quarterback in Luke Altmyer.
  • The entire starting offensive line returns, a huge advantage.
  • An experienced, cohesive defense led by a lockdown secondary.
  • Bret Bielema’s established culture of toughness and resilience.

This is no longer a surprise team. At No. 15 in my preseason rankings, Illinois has the talent, experience, and coaching to prove that 10-win seasons are the new expectation in Champaign.
